| USB Flash Drives Q&A |
| |
| |
| Q1: Why does my recently bought ADATA USB flash drive perform slower than my previously bought one? |
|
| |
| A: In order to design higher capacity and smaller dimension USB flash devices for the market, MLC (Multi-Level Cell) Flash technology is gradually replacing SLC (Single-Level Cell) products. MLC memory reads as fast as SLC, however it writes more slowly.
|
| |
| |
| Q2: What does "write protected" error message mean? |
|
| |
| A: Check to see if you get the same error when using the USB flash drive on other computers. If so, the
USB flash drive is damaged and needs to be serviced. |
| |
| |
| Q3: My USB 2.0 flash drive can only read at 2MB/sec, what's the difference from USB 1.1? |
|
| |
| A: According to the USB Cooperation, the data transfer rate for USB 2.0 is 60MB per second. However, the theoretical transfer rate can not be reached due to physical hardware limitations.
|
| |
| |
| Q4: Why can't my ADATA USB flash drive support Windows Vista? |
|
| |
| A: All ADATA USB flash drives can support Vista. Please confirm if the situation only exists on a specific
computer or on multiple systems in order to determine if it is a system version problem or a drive hardware issue.
|
| |
| |
| Q5: Can my earlier bought USB flash drive support Windows Vista? Is there any additional software update
needed? |
|
| |
| A: All ADATA USB flash drives can be used as plug and play devices on Windows 2000, XP and Windows Vista computers, with no firmware or software updates needed.
|
| |
| |
| Q6: Why does my USB flash drive become slower after formatting? Does the format type matter? |
|
| |
| A: The format type reflects the file allocation system, and it really matters to the overall data transfer speed. We recommend users to choose the format type according to your priorities.
|
| |
| |
| Q7: Why can't I make bootable USB flash drive on Windows XP, but can in Windows 98? |
|
| |
| A: Due to limits on the inner controllers, our earlier produced USB flash drives can only be set to be bootable
on Win98 / Win98se computers. And our newly produced USB flash drives can be set to be bootable on
Win XP or Win 2000. There is a software product called FlashBoot (full version costs US$26.00), which can
be used to make bootable USB flash drives and hard disks. Free version can be downloaded at
http://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/.
|
| |
| |
| Q8: Why my downloaded firmware doesn’t work on my UFD? Does the firmware version wrong? |
|
| |
| A: Since the controller version might be different in one long lasting model, we have different version corresponding firmware. If the downloaded firmware can’t be work on your UFD, it might be the version issue. Please contact our Customer Service people for the correct firmware. |
| |
| |
| Q9: Why does my FP1/FP2 work on my home computer only? |
|
| |
| A: FP1/ FP2 can only be used on computers with administrator privileges. On a standard user login, FP1/ FP2 will not be recognized
|
| |
| |
| Q10: Can FP1/FP2 work on Linux or MAC systems? |
|
| |
| A: As a result of design issues, our FP1/FP2 do not support Linux and MAC. |
| |
| |
| Q11: Can I remove the fingerprint identification function of my FP1/ FP2? |
|
| |
| A: Since the identification function is designed in the FP1/FP2 firmware, it can't be removed.
|
| |
| |
| Q12: Why can't the zip files in the USB flash drive be played? |
|
| |
| A: Please check if the same files can be played when saved in another USB flash drive or device. If the
situation remains, it should be a file issue. |
| |
| |
| Q13: Why can't a file larger than 4GB be saved to the flash drive? |
|
| |
| A: FAT32 file system has a limitation for the maximum file size it can handle, which is 4GB. The issue can be
solved by formatting with the latest exFAT, which is initially included in Windows Vista and later Windows
versions. Win XP users can add support for exFAT by installing an update from Microsoft at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704/. However, please note that the update kit is only for versions later
than Win XP SP2 or SP3. |
| |
| |
| Q14: Why can't I format a 64GB USB flash drive on Windows XP? |
|
| |

than Win XP SP2 or SP3.
|
| |
| |
| Q15: Why can't the exFAT formatted USB flash drive be used on computers running Windows XP? |
|
| |
| A: ExFAT support is not included in original Win XP installations. Win XP users can add support for exFAT by
installing an update from Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704/. However, please note that
the update kit is only for versions later than Win XP SP2 or SP3.

|
| |
| A: To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS.

|
| |
| |
| Q17: What are the differences between FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT? |
|
| |
| A: FAT, FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT are the most popular currently. Each of them has its own pros and cons.
